Phoenix Martial Arts achieved remarkable success at the Sovereign Taekwondo Organisation’s Open Championships held in Swindon on October 26th. A team of 12 members represented Phoenix, bringing home a total of 13 medals: 6 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze.
Notably, Phoenix dominated the boys’ black belt divisions. In the middleweight category, Logan Rutherford claimed gold after a final match against teammate Joseph McKinlay, while Oscar Cronin narrowly missed out on a medal in the same division. In the lightweight category, Adam McKinlay secured gold, defeating Kian Miller-Hogg, who earned silver. Jasmine Roux-Nel also took silver in the girls’ open-weight black belt sparring.
In the colored belt categories, Kelsey Lane took gold in girls’ sparring, while Vincent Justinavicius claimed gold in boys’ sparring and bronze in patterns, edging out his teammate Joseph McKay, who earned silver in sparring. Joseph’s brother, Samuel, showed resilience in his matches but missed out on a medal this time.
The adult colored belt divisions also saw success, with Stan Bonner edging out Lucas Kershaw in patterns for a Phoenix 1-2 finish. Both competed in separate sparring divisions, where Lucas claimed gold in his category and Stan earned bronze.
This highly successful day not only brought Phoenix Martial Arts a significant medal haul but also valuable experience for each participant. Congratulations to all our members for their hard work and dedication!
